Welcome to McKown Associates,
Geotechnical Engineers
Andy McKown has over 35 years of experience in construction and quarry blasting, rock engineering, and geotechnical engineering. He has assisted blasting companies and quarries in solving blast fragmentation, vibration, and airblast problems. He has assisted towns, public agencies, and developers in assessing the impacts of drilling and blasting on people, structures, and the environment.
Mr. McKown has extensive experience in close-in construction blasting, perimeter control blasting, and rock support, and has provided solutions to allow many projects to successfully move forward with blasting up to, below, and inside existing structures. He has also assisted in resolving environmental issues associated with blasting, such as perchlorates, nitrates, and carbon monoxide. Other environmental solutions have come in the form of designing and implementing "blast fractured trenches" to assist in in remediation of groundwater contamination in bedrock.
Mr. McKown assisted many public and private parties in solving problems associated with rockfall, rock and soil slope instability, and support of excavations in rock.
In the area of geotechnical engineering, Mr. McKown has been involved in a range of geotechnical engineering projects including tunnels, pipelines, highways, bridges, rapid transit facilities, water supply and sewage systems, water and wastewater treatment facilities, as well as schools, hospitals, and other buildings with both shallow and deep foundations.
He designed and implemented geotechnical instrumentation programs for a variety of geotechnical projects, to monitor settlement, lateral earth movements, groundwater levels, and vibrations. Mr. McKown has conducted pre and post construction condition surveys for a variety of structures. Mr. McKown has also assisted insurance companies and attorneys in damage claims investigations, consultation on settlement issues, blasting and vibration problems, and has served as an expert witness on geotechnical and blasting related cases. |
